What You Need to Know Before - and After - Your Hunt
Mounting a trophy starts long before it hits the shop. Proper preparation in the field and during transport makes all the difference. Below are answers to the most common questions we hear from hunters, outfitters, and first-timers alike. From skinning tips to delivery timelines, we’ve got you covered.
How should I skin my animal for taxidermy?
For shoulder mounts, leave at least 6 inches behind the front legs. Never cut up the brisket or neck. If you’re unsure, call us first—we’ll guide you through it.
How soon should I bring my animal in?
As soon as possible—preferably within 24–48 hours. The fresher the cape, the better the final result. If you're in the field longer, cool and freeze the cape properly. Fold the cape skin to skin and do not get wet.
How do I field dress an animal for a mount?
Avoid cutting into the chest or neck area. Focus on clean, minimal cuts and keep the hide free of blood and debris. Never drag the animal by the shoulders.
Can I store my cape or hide before bringing it in?
Yes—keep it cool, dry, and clean. Avoid setting it in standing water or directly on ice. Dry ice or refrigeration is preferred if you can't bring it in right away.
Should I freeze my cape?
If there’s any delay in delivery, freezing is a good option. Wrap it tightly in a plastic bag, remove air pockets, and freeze as soon as possible.
What should I avoid when handling my trophy?
Don’t salt the hide unless instructed, and avoid plastic bags unless freezing. Never store a raw cape in the sun or in a warm garage.
Do you accept full-body mounts or exotic game?
Yes! We work on everything from whitetail to African safari game and North American big game. Contact us about custom projects or specific species.
What’s the turnaround time?
Turnaround times vary by season and project complexity. We’ll give you an estimated timeline when you drop off your mount and keep you updated along the way.
Can I choose the pose or form?
Absolutely. We’ll walk you through all available pose options and help you choose what works best for your animal and display space.
